A word from bootcamp
I never thought that I would be here. I never thought that I would be sitting in a room, with other crazy, amazing, dreamers like me, planning for the opening of a brand new school. I had always pictured myself as a teacher, but in a public school because that is what was expected of me. It was the road that teachers naturally went down because that was the road that was laid out for us. For a long time, that was the road that I wandered, ran, sometimes cautiously crawled down until the rose-colored glasses were not-so-gently lifted from eyes. It was time for change. I never thought that I’d actually be the one to help change it. I mean, who knew that I would meet some seriously wonderful souls who would be feeling the same need to do something more. I didn’t completely picture myself being a part of a group of people who would start something that truly had the potential to change education as we knew it, but that is exactly what we’ve been doing. No pressure or anything.
These last few months of planning for your kids, has been an adventure to say the least. It has consisted of careful planning, learning curves, and some serious collaboration with colleagues and the community. This last week alone has been educator boot camp. Day in and day out planning, brain power, and if I’m honest, exhaustion. I LOVE IT! I feel like we’ve been excavating an ancient sight (can you tell we’ve been talking archaeology?) and we’ve finally found the artifacts that we’ve been searching for! We’ve spent every day solidifying logistics, working out kinks, and planning an amazing unit that is based on a topic that is actually relevant! This project will give our kids the real story of where we come from and who was here before us. It has such promise to show our kids that our history -all of our history-matters. I don’t want to give too much away, but let’s just say that this unit is going to be the bomb diggity!
I’m so excited to see what the future holds for the rest of our educator boot camp, and for the Verdi EcoSchool as a whole. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for embarking on this spectacular adventure with us. This boot camp would be nothing if it weren’t for the amazing families who have invested their faith in this vision!
