ARRIVAL, OPENING CIRCLE

12:45-1:45 MARINE BIOLOGY: ESTUARY HABITATS

In this course, students will take a deeper dive into the biology of the plant and animal species of the Indian River Lagoon and their interconnected interactions within the environment. The course will focus on three types of estuary habitats found within the lagoon: the rocky shoreline, seagrass beds, and mangrove nurseries. This course was designed specifically from feedback drawn from our student interest-inventories and will include on-site field research at the lagoon. This course is taught by Ms. Nikia Rice, who holds a Master of Science in Marine Biology, has taught at the Florida Institute of Technology, and brings over a decade of experience teaching marine science to various demographics through non-profit organizations locally and abroad.

1:45-2:15

SNACK AND FREE EXPLORATION

2:15-3:15

URBAN GARDENING AND FARM ANIMAL CARE

Students will learn concepts of sustainability, ecological balance, how to prepare soil, select seeds and plants, and even how to harvest their own vegetables, herbs, and different flowers. Students will explore the significance and value of the composter, plant hardiness and planting zones, plant propagation, proper care of seedlings, and how to care for newly transplanted additions to the garden. This semester, we will be adding the animal observations and care of our school's chickens and rabbits. The course is taught by local permaculture specialist Mikael Maynard.
